Should I buy Epson 822 or 822XL for the WF-4834?

Can I mix standard and XL cartridges?
Yes. Each cartridge is read separately, so any mix of 822 and 822XL works.
What other printers use Epson 822 ink?
Epson 822/822XL also fits the WorkForce Pro WF-3820, WF-3823, WF-4820, WF-4830, and WF-4833. If you own more than one, a single stock of cartridges covers them all.
Will other Epson cartridges fit the WF-4834?
No. Epson 802 (WF-4720/4730/4740) and Epson 902 (WF-C5xxx) look similar but aren't interchangeable. Always match the number on your current cartridge.
Are compatible 822XL cartridges safe for the WF-4834?
There is a real risk. Epson says the WF-4834 is designed for use only with Epson cartridges, and its FAQ says a firmware update can stop non-Epson cartridges from being recognized. Its remedy is genuine ink. If you run non-Epson cartridges, don't install firmware updates. Using third-party ink doesn't void your warranty under U.S. law. How do I replace the ink in the WF-4834?
With the printer on, start the replacement from the control panel (or when the printer prompts you) and open the ink cartridge cover it shows. Remove the empty cartridge, shake the new one gently, unpack it, and push it into the matching slot until it locks. Close the cover and let the printer charge the ink. Why won't the WF-4834 recognize a cartridge?
Reseat it firmly until it clicks, make sure the yellow tape is fully removed, and wipe the chip with a dry lint-free cloth. Turn the printer off for a minute. Can I print black text while a color cartridge is empty?
For a short while, on plain paper or envelopes only. On Windows, choose Black/Grayscale and click Print in Black in the Status Monitor. On a Mac, turn on Permit temporary black printing. Then replace the color cartridge.
Will the document feeder take legal-size originals and scan both sides?
Yes. The ADF holds 50 letter or 10 legal sheets, and Epson lists automatic two-sided scanning for letter size.
How much paper does it hold?
Two 250-sheet trays, so 500 sheets of plain paper, or up to 50 photo sheets or 10 envelopes, at sizes up to legal.
The installer stalls on Windows 11. Is that known?
Yes. Epson's WF-4834 support page lists it as a known issue (article wa00981), where the installer stops responding during setup.
Can I still buy a WF-4834?

- Two-sided is fully automatic for printing, copying, scanning and faxing, but the rated speed drops from 25 black / 12 color ISO pages a minute to 16 / 9 when printing both sides.
- Besides Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct and Ethernet, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy to help with setup.
- An owner who lost compatible cartridges to a firmware update was told on an expert Q&A site that Epson firmware can't be rolled back. Decide about updates before you install one, not after.
