Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide said HP+ could be turned off after setup and that warnings about non-HP cartridges could simply be dismissed. HP says HP+ can't be removed once it is activated, and the 2755e's dynamic security can refuse cartridges with non-HP chips outright.
The HP DeskJet 2755e uses HP 67 and HP 67XL ink cartridges in black and tri-color. The high-yield 67XL cartridges deliver about 240 black pages and 200 color pages — roughly 2x the page yield of standard HP 67s and the best value for everyday home printing.

How to Replace Ink in the HP DeskJet 2755e
- Power on the printer and open the front ink access door — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down lightly on the empty cartridge and pull it straight out toward you.
- Remove the new cartridge from its packaging and pull the orange plastic tab to remove the protective tape. Do not touch the copper contacts or ink nozzles.
- Slide the new cartridge into its slot until it clicks firmly in place.
- Close the access door. The printer will automatically align the new cartridge — follow the prompt in HP Smart to print an alignment page.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized: Remove the cartridge, gently wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinsert it firmly. Restart the printer if the error persists.
Streaks or faded prints: Run HP's cartridge cleaning tool from the HP Smart app or printer software. One or two cycles usually clears clogged nozzles.
Non-HP cartridge refused: HP lists the 2755e as a dynamic-security printer, meant to work only with cartridges that have new or reused HP chips. Cartridges with third-party chips can be blocked outright, with or without HP+, so this is not a warning you can click past. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip, like ours, are the safer choice.
Low-ink alerts too early: HP's ink-level meter often warns well before a cartridge is empty. Keep printing until quality drops before swapping cartridges.

No. HP says HP+ is embedded in the printer once activated and requires Original HP ink for the printer's lifetime. The only way to avoid it is to skip HP+ during setup.
It shows an E5 error and flashing lights, but there's no paper jam. What is it?
HP support says E5 usually points to a cartridge problem: not detected, incompatible or badly seated. Turn the printer off and on, clean the contacts, and reseat both cartridges. HP's answer also notes that non-HP or refilled cartridges can trigger it.
A brand-new 67XL reads empty or isn't recognized. What should I try?
HP's agent suggests power-cycling, wiping the cartridge and carriage contacts with a dry lint-free cloth (no alcohol), removing every bit of tape and reseating it a few times. If you have a known-good cartridge, swap it in to see whether the new one has a bad chip.
Does it print on both sides automatically?
No. HP lists two-sided printing as manual, so you flip the stack yourself when the driver prompts you.
Can the 2755e send a fax?
Only as a send-only mobile fax through the HP Smart app. The printer has no fax modem or phone jack.
