Quick answer: The Epson Stylus NX420W uses four Epson 125 standard cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The smaller, moderate-capacity Epson 124 cartridges fit too. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured Epson 125 Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow, plus a 4-pack.

The NX420W takes the same ink as the Stylus NX125 and other Stylus and WorkForce models from about 2010. Epson sometimes calls it the "Stylus NX420"; it's the same printer. Epson 69, 88, 126 and 127 cartridges look similar but don't fit it.

Is Epson 125 Worth It Over 124?

Yes. Epson 125 holds about twice the ink of the moderate-capacity 124. On October 24, 2026, Staples listed Epson's 125 black at $18.79 (out of stock), about 4.9¢ a page, and Walmart had Epson's 125 color 3-pack at $42.29. Epson's own store had the 124 black at $15.29 for only about 190 pages, roughly 8¢ a page, and each 124 color at $10.49. Our remanufactured Epson 125 cartridges are $8.95 each, about 2.3¢ a page for black, and the 4-pack is $32.95.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the Epson Stylus NX420W?

Turn the printer on. If the screen shows an ink message, press Start. Otherwise press Setup, choose Ink Cartridge Replacement and press Start.
Raise the scanner unit and open the cartridge cover. Don't touch the white cable inside.
Squeeze the tab on the old cartridge and lift it straight up.
Shake the new package four or five times, unpack it, peel off only the yellow tape without touching the green chip, and press it in until it clicks.
Close the cartridge cover, lower the scanner and press Start. Priming takes about two minutes; don't turn the printer off.

Yes. Both fit. Epson 124 is moderate capacity, about 190 black or 175 color pages; Epson 125 is standard, about 385 pages.

The ink message is still on after I put in a new cartridge.

It isn't seated. Press Start, push every cartridge down firmly until it clicks, then press Start again.

Why won't it print black when a color is empty?

Epson printers of this generation stop printing and copying when any cartridge is expended. Replace the empty one first. A cartridge you take out when it's low or empty can't be put back and used.

I can't get it onto my Wi-Fi.

Run Epson's wireless setup again from the software CD or the driver download. If it still won't connect, the USB port works as a fallback.
