The HP Envy 5535 uses HP 61 black and HP 61 tri-color ink cartridges, and also takes higher-yield HP 61XL cartridges. In July 2026 HP replaced the 61XL pair with a new HP 61 High Yield Black (about 360 pages) and a single HP 61 Tri-color (about 200 pages).
2026 change: In July 2026 HP refreshed the HP 61 line. The 61XL Black and 61XL Tri-color are now end of life, replaced by a new HP 61 High Yield Black (C0PA4AN, about 360 pages) and a single new HP 61 Tri-color (C0PA5AN, about 200 pages). There is no longer an XL tri-color. HP says the updated cartridges work in the same printers, with no new hardware or settings needed. Older HP 61 and 61XL cartridges still work in the ENVY 5535.

How to Replace Ink in the HP Envy 5535
- Power on the printer and open the cartridge access door — the carriage will slide to the center.
- Press down on the empty cartridge and pull it forward out of its slot.
- Unbox the new cartridge and peel the protective tape from the nozzles.
- Slide the cartridge into its color-coded slot and push up firmly until it clicks.
- Close the access door and let the printer print an alignment page.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized. Remove the cartridge, wipe the copper contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall firmly.
Streaky prints. Run the cartridge cleaning tool from the printer's touchscreen or HP's software. One or two cycles usually clears minor clogs.
Wi-Fi keeps dropping. The Envy 5535 supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only — confirm 2.4 GHz is broadcast and use HP Smart for setup.
Mobile print issues. Make sure your phone is on the same 2.4 GHz network as the printer when using HP Smart or AirPrint.

Yes. HP says the updated HP 61 cartridges work in the same printers that took the old ones, with no new hardware or settings, and Staples' compatibility list for the new high-yield black includes the ENVY 5535.
Is there still a 61XL tri-color for the ENVY 5535?
Not from HP. It folded the standard and XL tri-color into one new HP 61 Tri-color (C0PA5AN, about 200 pages). We still sell remanufactured 61XL tri-color cartridges built from original HP shells.
Where do I load photo paper?
In the main tray. There is no separate photo tray; the main tray takes up to 30 sheets of photo paper. You can also print photos straight from a memory card.
The screen keeps flashing an error like C4EBA23D. What should I try?
HP's suggested fix on a 5530-series model: with the printer on, take the cartridges out, unplug it, wait 60 seconds, power it back up and reinstall the cartridges only when it asks.
Does it print two-sided automatically?
Yes. Automatic two-sided printing is standard on the ENVY 5530 series.

- The ENVY 5535 is one model in HP's ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One series, so manuals, drivers and specs for the 5530 apply to it.
- It takes custom paper sizes up to legal (8.5 × 14 in), but borderless printing only goes up to letter size.
- In some regions Auto-Off is on by default and turns the printer off after 2 hours idle.
- The 2026 refresh leaves only one tri-color cartridge. The new HP 61 Tri-color is rated for about 200 pages, against about 300 for the legacy 61XL tri-color.
