Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide called this printer the "Envy 6452", listed it as sharing ink with itself, and said a "Non-HP cartridge" warning can be cleared by clicking OK and that turning off firmware updates or cancelling Instant Ink lets any compatible cartridge work. It is the HP ENVY Pro 6452, and HP's dynamic security can block cartridges with non-HP chips, so we no longer say compatibles print normally.
The HP ENVY Pro 6452 all-in-one printer uses HP 67 or HP 67XL ink cartridges: one black and one tri-color. HP rates the XL cartridges at about 240 pages (black) and 200 pages (tri-color), twice the standard sizes. It also has a 35-sheet document feeder, automatic two-sided printing and send-only mobile fax.

How to Replace Ink in the HP ENVY Pro 6452
- Power the printer on and open the front cartridge access door.
- Wait for the carriage to slide to the center.
- Press down lightly on the old cartridge to release it, then pull it straight out.
- Remove the protective tape from the new cartridge and slide it in until it clicks.
- Close the door and let the printer run its short alignment routine.

"Cartridge problem" alert: Reseat each cartridge and wipe the gold contacts with a lint-free cloth.
Streaky prints: Open HP Smart and run Clean Printheads. Repeat once if streaks persist.
Alignment off: After installing a new cartridge, print an alignment page from the HP Smart app.
Blocked cartridges: HP's dynamic security can block cartridges with non-HP chips on this printer, and on other HP models firmware updates have stopped cartridges that worked before. Remanufactured cartridges that keep the original HP chip are the safer choice. On an ENVY 6452e with HP+ turned on, only Original HP cartridges will work.

Does the ENVY Pro 6452 have a document feeder?
Yes. HP lists a 35-sheet automatic document feeder on top of the flatbed glass.
Can it print on both sides automatically?
Yes. HP lists automatic two-sided printing as standard.
Can it fax?
Only by mobile fax, and only to send. It works through HP's app at 14.4 kbps; the printer has no fax modem.
After changing cartridges the panel shows "E" and a number. What does it mean?
The code maps to HP's control-panel error list. E0 means a cartridge problem, so take both cartridges out, check they are HP 67 or 67XL, and reseat them.
Is my printer an ENVY Pro 6452 or an ENVY 6452e?
Check the label. HP's ENVY Pro 6452 (5SE47A) was not sold as an HP+ model. A separate ENVY 6452e came later for HP+, and only that model can have HP+ turned on.
ENVY Pro 6452 quirks worth knowing
- Borderless printing goes up to full letter size (8.5 x 11 in), and HP allows custom paper up to 594 mm (about 23 in) long.
- The input tray holds only 80 sheets, and the output tray 25.
- HP's own spec sheet lists the Wi-Fi two ways, as dual-band 802.11ac and as 802.11b/g/n, so we can't confirm 5 GHz support.
- HP rates it at 10 pages per minute in black and 7 in color (ISO).

Yes — the cartridges are interchangeable. Many users run XL black plus a standard tri-color.
Does the ENVY Pro 6452 need a setup cartridge?
No, your replacement cartridges install directly. Setup ink is only used the first time you unbox a brand-new printer.
Do Castle Ink HP 67XL cartridges work with HP+ or Instant Ink?
No. Instant Ink and HP+ are built around Original HP cartridges, and a printer with HP+ turned on requires Original HP ink for its whole life. HP+ applies only to the later ENVY 6452e, and cancelling Instant Ink does not remove it.

The XL black yields about 240 pages and the XL tri-color yields about 200 pages, depending on coverage.
