What Ink Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8034e Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The HP OfficeJet Pro 8034e uses four separate HP 910 or high-yield HP 910XL cartridges in black, cyan, magenta and yellow, and it also takes the HP 916XL super-high-yield black. Castle Ink stocks remanufactured 910XL with original HP chips: 910XL Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow.
Read this first: the "e" means this is an HP+ printer. If HP+ was turned on at setup, it is locked to Original HP ink for life. Details are below.

HP OfficeJet Pro 8034e
| Pillar (weight) | Score | What it is based on |
|---|---|---|
| Owner ratings (28%) | 84 | 4.30★ average across 1,227 ratings at Walmart (4.1) and Best Buy (4.4) |
| Expert reviews (18%) | 80 | PCMag 4.0/5 (for the OfficeJet Pro 8025, the same hardware) |
| Cost per page (24%) | 77 | About 4.4¢ per page blended (black + color) with our remanufactured 910XL (720 / 700 pages). Docked because the printer can reject cartridges without the maker's chip, and HP+ units take Original HP only. |
| Reliability (13%) | 86 | Most-reported problems: printhead event codes 62.80.03 and 62.80.13; 'cartridge problem' errors even with genuine 910XL; HP+ account and subscription lockouts |
| Features (12%) | 90 | Print, copy, scan, document feeder, auto two-sided printing, fax, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, touchscreen, 20 ppm black. |
| Value (5%) | 82 | Running cost and owner satisfaction |
Discontinued. HP's store marks the 8034e discontinued and points to the OfficeJet Pro 8139e, which uses HP 923 cartridges instead of 910.

What Ink Cartridges Does the HP OfficeJet Pro 8034e Take?
| Cartridge | HP part no. (standard / XL) | Approx. yield (standard / XL) | Castle Ink option |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP 910 Black | 3YL61AN / 3YL65AN | ~250 / ~720 pages | Remanufactured 910XL Black (OEM chip) |
| HP 910 Cyan | 3YL58AN / 3YL62AN | ~315 / ~700 pages | Remanufactured 910XL Cyan (OEM chip) |
| HP 910 Magenta | 3YL59AN / 3YL63AN | ~315 / ~700 pages | Remanufactured 910XL Magenta (OEM chip) |
| HP 910 Yellow | 3YL60AN / 3YL64AN | ~315 / ~700 pages | Remanufactured 910XL Yellow (OEM chip) |
| HP 916XL Black | 3YL66AN | ~1,500 pages | — |
HP lowered the published 910 yields: its cartridge pages now say 250 / 720 pages black and 315 / 700 per color, while the 8034e product page and many retailer listings still show the older 300 / 825 figures. We use the current numbers. HP 915 is the Asia-Pacific version of this cartridge and is region-locked, so it won't work in a U.S. 8034e.
Is HP 910XL Worth It?
Yes, for nearly everyone. The XL black prints almost three times the pages of the standard 910 and the XL colors more than twice as many. On October 14, 2026, Staples listed Original HP 910XL black at $56.89 (about 7.9¢ a page) and 910XL cyan at $31.89. Our remanufactured 910XL black with an original HP chip is $26.99 (about 3.7¢ a page), and each color is $11.99 (about 1.7¢ a page).
Before You Buy: HP+ and Dynamic Security
- HP+ activated at setup: HP's terms require Original HP ink for the life of the printer, plus an HP account and an internet connection. No compatible cartridge will work. Buy Original HP.
- HP+ declined: the printer still has HP dynamic security, which blocks non-HP chips. Remanufactured cartridges that reuse an original HP chip, like our 910XL OEM-chip line, are the ones that work.
- Firmware: HP says updates may block cartridges that worked before, so turn off automatic updates if you rely on remanufactured ink.
How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP OfficeJet Pro 8034e?
- With the printer on, open the front door and lift the cartridge access door.
- Wait for the carriage to stop.
- Push the cartridge down to release it, then pull it out.
- Remove the tab and wrapping from the new cartridge without touching the contacts.
- Slide it into its color-coded slot until it snaps, then close both doors.
Which Other Printers Use HP 910?
The 8034e is the same printer as the OfficeJet Pro 8035e; HP says they differ only in the Instant Ink bundle. HP 910 also fits the OfficeJet Pro 8025, 8025e, 8028e, the OfficeJet 8022e and the OfficeJet 8010 and 8015 series. The newer OfficeJet Pro 8135e does not; it uses HP 923.
What OfficeJet Pro 8034e owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, HP's support community and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Do I have to keep Instant Ink?
No. Instant Ink is optional and you can buy cartridges outright. Note that Instant Ink cartridges stop working once you cancel the subscription, so use them up first.
What does event code 62.80.03 or 62.80.13 mean?
Both point to a printhead or ink-system fault. HP's steps are a power-cord reset, clearing the carriage path, reseating the cartridges and printhead, cleaning the contacts, and updating the firmware.
Why does it say cartridge problem with a genuine HP cartridge?
Usually a contact or seating issue. Turn the printer off, reseat the cartridge firmly, and wipe the copper contacts on the cartridge and carriage with a lint-free cloth. See printer says ink cartridge not recognized.
Can it scan without an HP account?
Yes. HP says you can scan from the control panel to a computer or USB without signing in.
Does it copy two-sided automatically?
No. The 35-sheet document feeder is one-sided, so you flip two-sided originals by hand. Printing two-sided is automatic.
OfficeJet Pro 8034e quirks worth knowing
- Setting up HP+ added 12 months of Instant Ink and a second year of warranty, which is why so many units are HP+ enrolled.
- HP rates it at 20 pages a minute in black and 10 in color, with a 225-sheet tray.
- It takes paper up to legal size, faxes in color, and has Ethernet plus dual-band Wi-Fi.
- HP recommends up to 800 pages a month, well below the 20,000-page duty cycle.
