What Toner Does the Brother HL-L2480DW Use?
Last Updated:Quick answer: The Brother HL-L2480DW uses TN830 (about 1,200 pages) or high-yield TN830XL (about 3,000 pages) black toner, plus a separate DR830 drum unit rated for about 15,000 pages. Castle Ink stocks compatible TN830 and TN830XL.
It does not take the older TN760/TN730 toner or DR730 drum from the HL-L2370DW generation, and it does not take TN835, which fits only the HL-L2865DW and MFC-L2980DW.

Is TN830XL Worth It Over TN830?
Yes. TN830XL holds two and a half times as much toner. With our compatibles it costs about 2¢ a page against 3.3¢ for the standard TN830, and adding the drum's share (Brother lists the DR830 at $157.99) brings the all-in cost to roughly 3¢ a page. Because the printer ships with only a 700-page starter cartridge, most owners need their first replacement within a few months.
Toner vs. Drum: Which One Do I Replace?
The TN830 toner clips into the DR830 drum, and the two slide out together. "Replace Toner" or "Toner Low" means a new TN830. "Replace Drum" or "Drum End Soon" means a new DR830, and roughly every fifth TN830XL. A new toner never clears a drum message. Our drum vs toner guide explains the difference.
How Do I Replace the Toner in the HL-L2480DW?
- Leave the printer on and open the front cover.
- Pull out the toner-and-drum assembly as one unit.
- Push down the green lock lever and lift the used TN830 out of the drum.
- Rock the new cartridge side to side, remove its protective cover and push it into the drum until it clicks. Slide the green corona-wire tab back and forth a few times and return it to its home position.
- Slide the assembly back in and close the front cover.
Which Other Printers Use TN830 and DR830?
Brother lists 17 printers for this toner, including the HL-L2460DW, HL-L2405W, HL-L2420DW, HL-L2400D, DCP-L2640DW and MFC-L2820DW.
What HL-L2480DW owners ask
These are the questions that come up most for this printer on retailer Q&A pages, manufacturer support communities and owner reviews, answered in our words.
Does the HL-L2480DW have a document feeder or fax?
No. Despite the "HL" printer-only prefix it is a print, copy and scan 3-in-1, but scanning is from the flatbed glass only and there is no fax. The MFC-L2820DW adds a document feeder and uses the same toner and drum.
What does "Drum !" mean?
Brother says the drum's corona wire needs cleaning: slide the green tab on the drum back and forth a few times. It can also mean the toner is not seated in the drum. If it continues after cleaning, replace the DR830.
I fitted a new drum but it still says Replace Drum.
The drum counter has to be reset by hand after a new DR830 goes in. Brother's manual walks through the reset from the control panel.
Can I keep printing after "Replace Toner"?
Yes, if you turn on Continue Mode in the settings. The printer keeps going until the print gets too faint. "Cartridge Error" usually means the toner is not clicked into the drum.
Why is it slower than the advertised 36 pages a minute?
Two-sided printing is the default. Brother's 36 ppm rating is for one-sided pages, so switch the default to single-sided if speed matters more than paper.
HL-L2480DW quirks worth knowing
- Despite the HL (printer-only) prefix, it is a 3-in-1 with a color flatbed scanner.
- The starter toner is 700 pages, but the drum in the box is a full 15,000-page DR830.
- Wi-Fi is dual-band (2.4 and 5 GHz) with WPA3, and there is a wired Ethernet port too.
- Refresh EZ Print subscription cartridges stop working if the subscription is cancelled, so buy retail or compatible cartridges if you don't subscribe.
