Last Updated:Correction (October 2026): an earlier version of this guide listed a 232XL color cartridge, gave yields of about 500 pages for 232XL black and 165 for standard 232 colors, and said the XP-4200 prints two-sided only manually. Epson makes 232XL in black only (about 380 pages), rates standard 232 colors at about 140 pages, and lists automatic two-sided printing. It also suggested we sell 232 cartridges; we don't.
The Epson Expression Home XP-4200 all-in-one wireless printer uses Epson 232 and Epson 232XL Claria ink cartridges. Epson rates standard 232 at about 150 pages black and 140 pages per color. The high-capacity 232XL comes in black only and is rated for about 380 pages; there is no 232XL color cartridge.

We don't sell Epson 232 or 232XL cartridges, so we can't recommend one of our own for the XP-4200. Earlier versions of this page suggested we did, and that was wrong.
Our advice is to buy genuine Epson. Epson labels this printer for Epson cartridges only, and its product page warns that damage caused by non-genuine ink isn't covered by the printer's limited warranty. The best value is Epson's combo pack of a 232XL black with standard 232 cyan, magenta and yellow (T232XL-BCS, about 380 pages black and 140 per color). If you print little color, add a spare 232XL black (T232XL120-S) rather than a second full set.

How to Replace Ink in the XP-4200
- Power on the XP-4200 and lift the scanner unit.
- Wait for the cartridge carriage to slide to the access position.
- Squeeze the release tab and pull the empty cartridge straight up.
- Shake the new cartridge gently, peel off the yellow tape, and click it into the matching color slot.
- Lower the scanner unit and let the printer finish charging the new ink before you print.
Troubleshooting Tips
Cartridge not recognized: Remove the cartridge, wipe the gold chip with a lint-free cloth, and reinstall it firmly until it clicks.
Faded or banded output: Print a nozzle check, then run up to two or three head cleaning cycles if lines are missing.
Slow printing: Switch quality to Standard rather than Best and confirm the paper type matches what's loaded.
Ink levels stuck: Power-cycle the printer for one minute and reseat the cartridges to refresh the chip handshake.

Why does my color ink run down when I print only black?
Epson says all four inks are used for printing and for maintenance, and all four must be installed for the printer to work. An empty color will stop it.
Some guides say the XP-4200 uses Epson 604. Which is right?
Both, depending on where it was sold. Outside the U.S. (Australia, for example) the XP-4200 takes Epson 604 and 604XL. U.S. units take Epson 232, and the two are not interchangeable.
It keeps saying there's torn paper or foreign material inside after I cleared a jam.
Check the paper path again for scraps and turn the printer off and on. If the message won't clear, contact Epson support; a technician answering an owner on a support forum said it may be a hardware fault.
My XP-4200 wants a firmware update and won't print until I install it. What then?
Install the update from the printer's settings menu over Wi-Fi. Afterwards print a nozzle check, and run a head cleaning if lines are missing.
Does it use a maintenance box?

- It prints two-sided automatically, but it is a flatbed-only all-in-one: no document feeder and no fax.
