Quick answer: The HP Photosmart 5514 uses four separate HP 564 cartridges: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. The high-yield HP 564XL versions fit too. The 5514 belongs to HP's Photosmart 5510 series and takes the same ink. HP sells a different cartridge in other regions: HP 364 in Western Europe, HP 178 in Africa, the Middle East, CIS countries and Japan, and HP 862 in China and India. None of them fit a U.S. printer.

HP's 5510 datasheet rates the 564XL colors at about 750 pages each. The HP 564 photo black (CB317WN / CB322WN) is for five-ink models and has no slot in the 5514.

Is HP 564XL Worth It?

Yes. On October 16, 2026, Staples listed HP's 564XL black at $47.99 (about 8.7¢ a page) and the standard 564 black at $26.99. The 564XL cyan was $34.39 in stores only, the standard 564 colors were $23.89 to $24.99 each, and HP's 4-pack with an XL black and standard colors was $120.99. Our remanufactured 564XL cartridges are $10.95 each, about 2¢ a page for black, and our 4-pack of four XLs is $21.99.

How Do I Replace the Ink in the HP Photosmart 5514?

With the printer on, lift the cartridge access door. The scanner section hinges up, and the carriage moves into view.
Press the tab on the front of the empty cartridge to release it, then lift it out.
Unpack the new 564 cartridge and twist or pull off the orange cap. Don't touch the contacts or nozzles.
Slide it into the slot with the matching color icon and press down until it clicks.
Close the access door. The printer may print an alignment page.

Do I need the HP 564 photo black cartridge?

No. The 5514 has four slots: black, cyan, magenta and yellow. Photo black is for five-ink models like the Photosmart 7510.

Does my 5514 print on both sides automatically?

Only the B111h version does. HP's spec sheet lists automatic two-sided printing as standard on the 5514 B111h but not on the B111c or B111d. Check the model label on the back.

It says 'There is a problem with the printer or ink system.'

That points to the printhead or ink delivery, a common failure in HP 564 Photosmarts. Turn it off and on, reseat every cartridge and update the firmware. If the error stays, HP generally says the printhead has failed and advises replacing the printer.

Why won't it join my Wi-Fi?

It only works on 2.4 GHz networks. Connect it to a 2.4 GHz network name, or use USB.
