Canon Ink Buying Guide

Which Canon ink cartridge does my printer use?

The cartridge number (PG-245, CL-246, PGI-280 and so on) is printed on your old cartridge. You can also match your PIXMA or MAXIFY model in the finder table above: PG-245/CL-246 fits the PIXMA MG2522, TS3122 and TR4520; PG-240/CL-241 fits the MG3620 and MX472; PGI-280/CLI-281 fits the TS6120, TS8120 and TR8520. For other models, use Find Ink by Printer.

Standard, XL or XXL: which is cheaper per page?

The bigger size. Standard, XL and XXL cartridges in the same family are the same physical size and fit the same printers; the larger ones simply hold more ink. A PG-245 black is rated for about 180 pages; the PG-245XL for 300. If you print more than a few pages a week, XL or XXL costs less per page.

Cartridges with a built-in printhead vs. separate ink tanks

Canon uses two designs. PG and CL cartridges (PG-240, PG-243, PG-245, PG-275 and their CL color partners) have the printhead built into the cartridge, so every new cartridge brings a fresh printhead. PGI and CLI tanks (PGI-250, PGI-270, PGI-280 and their CLI partners) are ink-only; the printhead stays in the printer, and you replace just the color that runs out.

Canon Ink FAQs

Will remanufactured ink work in my Canon PIXMA?

Yes. Canon printers accept remanufactured cartridges. You may see a message that the remaining ink level cannot be detected; press and hold the Stop/Resume button for about 5 to 10 seconds (or confirm on the screen) and printing continues, though the ink-level readout may not display.

Are PG-243 and PG-245 interchangeable?

Yes. PG-243 and PG-245 (and CL-244 and CL-246) fit the same PIXMA printers. They differ only in ink capacity (PG-243 and CL-244 hold less), not in fit.

My new Canon cartridge prints blank or streaky. What should I do?

Make sure the protective tape is fully removed, then run one or two cleaning cycles from the printer's maintenance menu. If the problem continues, contact us and we'll replace the cartridge.

Will using remanufactured ink void my Canon warranty?

No. Under the U.S. Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, Canon cannot void your printer warranty just because you used third-party ink.

How do I change the ink in a Canon printer?

Open the cover, wait for the holder to stop moving, press or lift out the old cartridge, and click the new one into the matching slot. Close the cover and the printer finishes setup on its own.
